What Is a Reroof

reroof new roof shingles no overlay

Reroofing is the process of installing a new roof on top of the existing shingles, without removing them.  This is also called „roof overlay” and it is practiced for different reasons:

  • To save costs. There is less time and work needed, if the old roof is not torn down and disposed, which will translate into lower costs
  • To have less impact on the environment
  • To have better insulation
  • To shorten the installation of the new roof

However, a reroof is not always possible.

A new layer of shingles installed on top of the existing one can be too heavy, in the case of most roofing materials. This is why a reroof is possible only with asphalt shingles and metal shingles, which are lightweight and thus suitable for such a project.

Additionally, a reroof cannot be done if the structure of the roof is damaged, or if the existing shingles are curled and do not form a flat surface. A damaged roof structure is a risk you should never take, because the consequences can be the most severe – the collapse of the roof.

You must weigh very well and responsibly the pros and cons of reroofing, by taking the advice of a professional company like Blue Ox Exteriors.
